You must avoid tanning at least two weeks prior to the treatment.

Do you take medications?

What is your skin phototype?

Laser works best on light complexions; phototypes 5 and 6 (darker skins) are not good candidates.

What kind of hair do you have?

Hair colors, sorted from best to less suitable for laser: black, red, blonde, gray hair.

Likewise, dark hair on milky skin is more suitable for laser than light hair color on dark skin.

Dark, coarse hair is the ideal candidate for our laser hair removal treatment.

Laser doesn't work very well on white and gray hair. However, most patients with gray hair have darker hair in the armpits, forearms and around the bikini line and may benefit from the treatment.

Actually, we target chromophores. These are elements that determine the color of a molecule. The most important chromophores for a laser hair removal treatment are melanin, hemoglobin and water. As these elements absorb energy, we use them selectively, as the targets.

Melanin, for example, is responsible for the color of the skin and hair. Its absorption zone begins in the Ultra Violet and goes all the way to the near Infra Red (the longer the wave length, the less absorption).

How Aspen Spa's Laser Hair Removal Works

A therapist will press the head of the laser device against your skin and press a pedal. You will see a flash and feel a little discomfort, like a pin prick. Then, she will move the head along a straight line, so that each impact doesn't overlap with the previously impacted area.   

It takes less than 5 minutes to treat an earlobe, about 10 around the lips or the underarm area and almost 45 minutes for the legs.

Preparation

A day prior to the session you must shave the area to be treated. This is required for two main reasons:

·         to prevent burns

·         to allow the laser beam to pass through the skin

The aerial part or the hair is easily burnt by the laser; its ashes may burn or irritate the skin. Additionally, the aerial part acts as a screen and blocks the light. However, we need the other part of the hair, under the surface of the skin, because we target its pigments. Since the hair has melanin, it is the darker element and we use it to heat the follicle.  Hence, do not wax the area, just shave it.

What Can You Expect?

You will need several sessions to permanently eradicate hairs in certain areas. About 80% of our patients report no more hair growth after 6 sessions, but this depends on many factors, such as skin phototype, hair thickness and color, laser beam intensity and the ability of the therapist.

Are There Any Side Effects?

·         You can expect some irritation and transient hypo or hyper pigmentation.

·         After the session, the therapist will either apply or suggest a cream to soothe the irritation, such as Aloe Vera or a corticosteroid if needed.

·         You should avoid tanning for two weeks.
